When Ted enters, he steps over Mitzy’s ball without spotting it.

“Good morning, you three,” he greets them. “I’ll be back soon with your breakfasts.” He heads into the storage closet.

“What do we do now?” Gus cries. “He didn’t notice the ball.”

“Let’s hope he doesn’t notice the crushed-up papers under his desk either,” Buttons says.

Gus rams his nose through the grate. “If you unlock my cage again, I can—”

He pauses at the sound of crunching gravel. “Alert! Alert! Intruder approaching! I repeat, intruder approaching!” Buttons dives under his blanket.

“QUIET!” Luna sneers. But Gus continues barking as a fuzzy white cloud comes into the lobby. It skids across the floor in a click-clack of activity.

“Guys, great news!” the fluffy form calls.

“Mitzy?” Gus yelps.

Buttons pokes one eye out cautiously. “Mitzy!” he exclaims.

“It is me!” Mitzy scampers over to Luna and slips her tongue through the grid. “Come here. Your ears are filthy.”

“BLECH.” Luna stays out of Mitzy’s reach, but she swishes her tail like she’s waving hello.
